The area of Mao in the province of Valverde in the Northern part of the Dominican Republic has very dry weather conditions which are good for organic banana production and therefore the Island is one of the biggest organic banana producer country in the world.
The Dominican Republic shares the "Española Island" with Haití, the poorest and least developed Latin american country. DOLE buys organic bananas from serious and social responsible Dominican companies only for their European markets.
